CHAPTER EIGHT

Brett paced around the living room for several minutes with his cell phone pressed to his ear. Maggie took the time to wash up what few dishes were left from dinner and put away her laptop. Her online search had netted few results. Or, maybe more accurately, there wasn’t much online about Daniel Bradshaw’s disappearance. It was clear he had not been declared dead, but it seemed to her that no one was really out looking for him, either. She found a little information about a woman he may have been dating, but after all these years, it was hard to tell what had been going on back then.

Brett joined her in the kitchen a few moments later. He frowned and gripped the back of a chair. “Well, that was interesting,” he said.

“Don’t just stand there, tell me!” Maggie said. “What did Brooks say?”

“Apparently, your new friend Gary never showed up.”

Brett shook his head. “He was supposed to meet with Brooks this afternoon, but he was a no show. After what I told Brooks about your meeting with him, I think he’s starting to get a bit suspicious.”

“Suspicious of what?” Maggie asked.

“The personal items belonging to Daniel Bradshaw that have surfaced all of a sudden,” Brett said. “And the connection to the Hendersons. Do you still have the woman’s phone number?”

“Of course,” Maggie said. She pulled out her phone and handed it to her husband. “That’s the number that was on the dog’s tag.”

“When this guy Gary came to visit you today, he was mad because you called this number?”

“That’s what he said,” Maggie said. “He was angry with me for not calling the number on some poster he had made for the dog.”

“But I thought Gary was the one who was keeping the dog from Donna?”

“I’m not sure what these people have going on to be honest with you. It sounds like it’s going to be a messy divorce. I guess he was mad I returned the dog to the wrong person, even though I’d never seen that poster before in my life. For whatever reason, he thought I was supposed to have called his number instead of hers.”

“You said the dog had been well taken care of?” Brett confirmed.

“Gary kept her groomed,” Maggie said. “She couldn’t have been gone for long even though the wife said it had been about a month. Like I said, those two are so caught up in their own personal issues that it’s probably one of those situations where there are three sides to the story; his, hers, and the truth.”

“Just long enough to find personal items belonging to a missing person,” Brett said. “And we still don’t know how she came to have them.”

“What are you going to do?” Maggie asked.

“Right now, I’m going to meet up with Brooks,” Brett said. “We’re going to pay the Hendersons a visit.”

“Let me go with you,” Maggie said.

“You know that’s not a good idea,” Brett said.

“The first time I met Donna, she refused to give me her name,” Maggie said.
